Taste of the Tropics: Traditional and Innovative Cooking from the Pacific and Caribbean

What an amazing cookbook!
A friend lent this book to my partner and me. We looked through the recipes and couldn't find one we wouldn't make. As cooking afficianados who buy a number of cookbooks a year, this is by far the best resource we've found!

This book is filled with wild & delicious recipes.
What a great book! I've tried about a dozen recipies so far and they are all superb. The Jerk Chicken Recipe on page 67 is so wonderful we have made it several times. My lips felt like they were blown up to 50 PSI but I couldn't stop eating it. The Island Roasted Chicken with Thyme Mustard Sauce is another unforgettable meal. Ground Nut Stew, Black Bean Soup, and Papaya,Mint,Coconut Soup are also memorable. This is a "Must Have" book.

Very good recipes, easy to work from
Have used this from a friend. Am so sad that it is not available anymore. It should be republished so many more people can enjoy it!

Incredible
I just returned from the Islands yesterday and couldn't wait to open my cookbook I purchased a few years ago.. I have made many many recipes from this book and I am always amazed at how great the recipes turn out. I would love to see another edition come with some recipes from some of the newer resturants.Aloha and Mahalo

This is Hollywood: An Unusual Movieland Guide
Published in Paperback by Ken Schessler (15 February, 2002)
Author: Ken Schessler

Dead Celebrities RULE!
If you're headed to Hollywood and don't believe in corporate pre-determined tourist traps grab this book! Lots of cool places to visit that aren't owned/run by Universal, right down to the spot where Baretta made his last hit! Maybe you'll even see Huggy Bear. And did you know that that crackwhore Pia Zadora leveled Pickfair? You will if you read this guide. Cool stuff.

An Excellent Guide to Hollywood's Sordid Past
This is a great guide for anyone who is interested in the scandals, murders, suicides and hauntings of the Los Angeles area. The information is detailed and accurate, and there are several maps which are good enough that even someone who is not familiar with the area can navigate easily. The book also contains maps to celebrity graves in many area cemetaries. This book is excellent for those who may be visiting LA and want to see some unusual sites; it is also interesting for people who have always lived in LA. Maybe you live next door to the house where Clara Bow "entertained" the entire USC football team and don't even know it! If you're not into the morbid stuff, the book also contains the locations of many sites used in TV and movies. I should also mention that I have found that this latest edition is only readily available from Amazon or directly from the author, so don't go looking for it in your local bookstore.

Great Kids Book
This is one of the best written, most comprehensive and accurate children's books about Alaska that I have found. The illustrations are well drawn and clever. This book holds the interest of young children and I would recommend it as a great addition to any young child's library.

Great educational book!
I was given this book by my aunt who moved to Point Barrow, Alaska to be a teacher there. She gave me this book to teach me about where she was to be living. This book taught me a lot in a very educational way. I highly recommend it, The pictures are great too!!

Thomas Guide 2000 Bay Area: County Coverage of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marine, San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties: Digital Edition: 85th Year

Close to a GPS for so much less
Being new to the bay area need not be daunting anymore. With this book in hand, you can go anywhere you want. All you need is an address. And since the map is in separate A4 size pages, it is very easy to look at different sections at the same time. No need to fold and unfold, no need to be worried about its getting torn.

The maps also have a lookup based on the house numbers. It will be the best investment you will have made in a long long time.

Thomas Bros.--Invaluable tool for the terminally lost
If you live in the Bay Area, the Thomas Bros. map book "Metropolitan Bay Area" is the one volume to keep by your side. It covers just about every single town and street between San Jose and the North Bay. If you're among the terminally lost, this is the book to have...forget those map web sites!

The Thomas Guide Revolutionized The World Of Cartography!
It is true that the Thomas Guide is the most conclusive map book around! I recently purchased the 2001 LA/Orange Thomas Guide, as well as many others, at the Thomas Brothers store in San Francisco on Jackson and Columbus. They had every Thomas Guide known to man, and wall maps to accompany them!

Best Maps
The Thomas Guide is the definitive map for anyone who needs to find addresses quickly and easily in the Los Angeles area. It lists every street imaginible, even tiny ones like the one near where I live that doesn't even have a street sign, yet Thomas Guide knows its name.

Streets are indexed by street name, making them easy to find in the grid-like maps on each page. There is even a handy zip code listing. Great for sales people and the like who need to find their way through unfamiliar territory quickly and easily. I'd be lost without my Thomas Guide.

You need to get this reference book.
If you're at all like me and are just prone to get lost easily or just need to be sure. You need to buy this book. I gave it 5 stars because to the people that know how to read maps well will have no problem getting there way around the book. I think it should have been made just a tad bit easier. For example, connect all the cities page to page, not some cities here, and the connecting ones way on another page. Although it tells you how to read it, and says it was made to be easier to read that way, I haven't tooken the time to learn it. Zipcode finder is another great tool added to this book. It comes with a cd-rom to help find the page you are looking for. Just give it a try. They're known for great maps. Take care.

I couldn't put this down....
I couldn't put this book down...especially when I was lost in Downey.

An alltime classic.

A Tidy Universe of Islands
Published in Paperback by Mutual Publishing (June, 1997)
Author: William M., Dr. Peck
Average review score:

enlightening view of the pacific islands and their people
I borrowed this book from a friend because I really wanted to read something about the history of the islands. Dr. Peck shares a unique, humorous yet respectful rendition of life on the islands starting back in the 50's. His admiration of the people and their way of life is heartwarming and gave me an eye opening lesson on what the islanders lived through during the war years. My hats off to this book and its author.

It's my dad's book, of course it gets five stars!
It reads like, because it is, a collection of articles written over the course of a very intersting life. It probably ought to be also filed under Rota and Northern Marianas Islands, since that's where he lives now.

Tours for Free California: Southern California & Las Vegas, Nevada
Published in Paperback by Emerson's Eye Press (01 May, 2002)
Author: Jodi Jill
Average review score:

Good Idea and great tours
I bought this book a couple of weeks ago. It really is a fun and interesting twist on entertainment. I was hoping to gain information on the community, and I did. But I also was blown away by how many tours are in this book and how much fun we had. I really enjoyed the golf ball tour and I really liked the vitamin tour. These were unknowns at the time. If I had a grip with the book, it would be that the author put free days of musuems and galleries plus free festival in the back of the book and I don't have enough time to do all the stuff listed in the book. It is a good book though and will get to as much as possible with my schedule, promise!!!

Great chance to see California with no money
This book is a great reference if you are thinking about going to Southern California on a limited budget. There are plenty of places the author highlights that are not found in other books (trust me I have purchased plenty of CA books). The tours are appropriate for the kids as well. Plus you have over 100 to choose from, meaning you could tour for weeks on end and still have places to go. If you are vacationing in California, consider getting the book. It is a great find for the limited budget.

Traditional Tapa Textiles of the Pacific

Authors: Roger Neich, Mick Pendergrast, and Krzysztof Pfeiffer
Average review score:

The best!
I'm an artist and into designs, and this book is the best! Lots of great close-up color pictures! It also has lots of wonderful old photos of natives of different islands wearing the tapa cloth, and a lot of interesting text (which I haven't read all of because I bought the book mostly for the pictures.) But I really recommend this book for anyone interested in great native designs.

excellent
beautiful reproductions of an outstanding collection, along with photographs of the making/use of the cloth
